I started writing way back in time as sort of a life experience while serving in the Marines with a couple of buddies while in boot camp, early stateside duty assignments, and Viet Nam.
I was the Intel NCO in the Oregon Army National Guard, (S-2, HHC, 41st Infantry Brigade) and was working up exercise scenarios one day when I knocked out four pages while the officers went to lunch. Both were impressed. Later I started my second book sort of at the suggestion of one of the officers. He said I had a flair for military details and North Korean military subject matter.
Both had decent starts and was going well until my youngest son was killed in a motorcycle accident July 30th, 1990. I have looked at both several times since that terrible day, usually when replacing a computer or finding some written notes that were in the pile on my desk.
I am thinking now it might be time to start working on them again, at least one to get back into the process and theĀ swing of things.
For my Korean themed book there are things that need to be done first. I have to update some historical factors and bring everything up to date. I need to develop several of the characters more before proceeding. I need to expand out several of the scenarios to give me more latitude in character development.
The Vietnam book just needs to tie a few things together and finish several character developments. The rest should be easy since I can draw on my own experiences in country in regards to combat incidents, the terrain, the weather, the bugs, and most of all the boredom. Yes, there was boredom. It has been said that war is 90% total boredom and 10% mass panic and sensory overload.
